Therefore, I feel it is my duty to describe what happened. Jessica Leonard was an innocent girl, who weighed a perfectly normal 7 1/2 pounds at birth. She had a minor disorder which gave her the urge to eat slightly more than a normal person. If her mother refused to feed her, she would throw a tantrum, which is typical of any 5 year old child. Her mother complied, but she got so used to this behavior she didn't realize that she was putting her daughters life in danger. This bad parenting caused Jessica to get anything she wanted, causing her massive weight. At age 8, she weighed nearly 450 pounds and was not able to walk well at all. She rolled around the house and used a wheelchair elsewhere. She had trouble breathing, and was eventually taken to the hospital because of this. CPS stepped in, and took her away, placing her on very strict diet. She has lost 320 pounds and went to public school for the very first time after this. She lost all her weight naturally. Whose fault was it? Mostly, the mother's. She fed her want she wanted all the time, not just occasionally. Also, the disorder was not the real cause, and the tantrums were natural. Bad parenting caused it to turn worse. To this day Jessica still struggles to fight her urge to eat, but can finally enjoy a normal life. God bless this child and her mother. UPDATE 12-06-08: Here is some info on the mother. Her name is Carolyn Sue Gouge. She was regularly reported to authorities when seen with Jessica because of the child's weight. An anonymous person called Child Protective Services in one case, essentially saving her child's life for her. Carolyn even said she "lacked the stamina" to keep her from feeding Jessica. Carolyn has said while being interviewed on the subject that: "I did wrong by letting her eat so much. And I cannot describe the guilt I feel for the fact it that was a stranger who forced her to get help. I truly believe that if she had not gone to the hospital when she did, she would have died. I've told Jessica, I'm a much different parent to the one I was when she was in the hospital. We are both determined that she will not regain the weight she has lost."
