Title: "Endless Love" : A Tribute to the 1981 film starring Brooke Shields & Martin Hewitt View count: 11454 Rating: 4.95 (20 ratings) Description: In 1981, Brooke Shields followed up her starring role in "The Blue Lagoon" with this love story based on the Scott Spencer bestseller. The film, "Endless Love", was directed by Franco Zeffirelli (who was most famous for the late 1960's version of "Romeo & Juliet"). Probably most famous for its Oscar nominated theme song, "Endless Love" still holds up today as a story of the obsessive love between a 17 year old boy and his 15 year old girlfriend. Controversial upon its release, Brooke Shields had to defend her role (as she was underage at the time), due to the nude scenes. She was all over the telelvision talk shows at the time, discussing that a body double was used in the more provocative scenes. There were also rumors just before the film was released, that it would be rated "X", but those rumors proved to be false. As we all know, Brooke Shields continued to be a successful both on the big screen ("Sahara", "Brenda Star")and on television ("Suddenly Susan", "Lipstick Jungle", "Hannah Montana"), but she would never again reach the heights of the success she experienced in 1980 with "The Blue Lagoon" and in 1981 with this film. Martin Hewitt all but disappeared from the scene after making his feature debut in "Endless Love". He went on to make several direct to video features and even appeared as a security guard on the ABC soap "General Hospital". One major Hollywood box office star did emerge from his feature film debut in "Endless Love" and that believe it or not, was Tom Cruise. He appeared briefly in "Endless Love" (and appears here this video wearing denim shorts on the school field and suggesting that his character had set fire to someone's home and became a hero when trying to save them from it). James Spader ("Boston Legal"), and Ian Ziering ("90210") are also featured in the film as Shield's older and younger brothers. A terrific soundtrack which included appearances by Kiss, Cliff Richard, as well as Diana Ross & Lionel Richie accompanied the release of the film and went on to sell millions of records. Unfortunately, "Endless Love" was not the huge success that Universal Pictures had hoped, and remains unreleased on DVD today in this country (for no explicable reason).
