Title: Cyprian de Renaix - Missa "Praeter Rerum Seriem" (4/5). View count: 107 Rating: 5.0 (3 ratings) Description: IV. Sanctus. The Gabrieli Consort of Voices. Paul McCreesh, chorus master. ______________________________ Cyprian de Renaix (frequently known as Cipriano de Rore, that was simply his 'Italianized' name) was born in 1515 or 1516. He was a Franco-Flemish Composer, born in Renaix (Ronse), a little town near the border between the French- and the Dutch-speaking areas. He studied Composition in Venice, under Adrian Willaert's guide, getting famous as a Musician in Brescia, where his Madrigals had a great success. Althought this, between 1542 and 1546 he actually constantly travelled between Venice and Brescia before establish in Ferrara from 1546. As a Choirmaster, he left us lots of Madrigals, Motets, Masses and Vocal Chansons. Nearly all these works where destinated to D'Este's court. In 1559 he left his office to Francesco Viola, member of an ancient Ferrarese family, gaining the same office at the service of Farnese's court, in Parma, leaving it in 1563. In this year, he succeeded to Willaert as Choirmaster in Venice, leaving this prestigious office after only one year; he spent his last year of life in Parma. ______________________________ The here-present Mass is based on the omonymous Nativity Motet by Josquin Des Prez. The Motet featured a monumental 6-parts texture, but de Renaix adds a seventh part to his 'Parody' Mass. The tone of this composition is severe and the building procedes polyphonically: the use of the Canon is very frequent and the original Material (expecially the 'Cantus Firmus') is fragmentated and modyfied throught distributing it between all the voices. A curiosity: althought this Mass was composed during de Renaix' first Venetian stay, it contains an hommage to Hercules the Second Duke of Ferrara, his first patron: all the movements includes, the Latin dedication "Hercules secundus, dux Ferrariae quartus: vivit et vivet." ("Hercules the Second, fourth Duke of Ferrara, lives and will live.") that is sometimes sung by the lower voices.
