She turned around and saw Chad leaning against the side of the building. He was dressed in a formal suit and tie. He waved to her to meet him. Sonny turned back to Madge and murmured a quick apology before turning and running through the crowd. A million thoughts were rushing through her head as she pushed past people and tripped on their shoes. She bumped into a waiter who was carrying a tray of cocktails. Surprised, he lost grip and the tray wobbled before crashing to the ground. Sorry! Sonny yelled behind her as she kept running. When Sonny finally reached him, she was out of breath. What are you doing here? she asked between gasps for breath. Chad smiled. Dont play dumb. I know you, youre smarter than that. Sonny glared at him, and he laughed, holding up his hands defensively. Hey, youre the one who invited me in the first place! I did not! Sonny interjected. All I did was mention— You invited me, Chad cut in. So I came. And Im really late, but so what? Im here. Sonny sighed and tried to wipe the scuff marks off her shoes. Im not even going to ask you what took so long. Is this the only reason you came here? To rub in my face the fact that Vince isnt on my arm? Chad stuck his hands in his pockets. I—want to talk to you, he said slowly. Oh? said Sonny, looking up. Well in case you havent noticed, Im at my first premiere and I just about made a fool of myself! Chad chuckled and rolled his eyes. Ok, I have to admit it was entertaining to see your klutz side. Sonny gave up on her shoes and straightened to face him. If you want to talk, were going to have to do it some other time. Im busy now. Sonny hoisted up her skirts again and strode angrily down the street. Shed missed the limo; the only thing to do was walk. Chad followed her. Arent you always busy? When she didnt answer, he continued. Look, all I want is an hour. Tops. We can walk downtown and talk over lunch or something. Sonny gave him a look. Its after four, Chad. I already ate. Chad looked down. Well, if youre going home, can I follow you? Sonny glanced at him. Not if youre going to stalk me, she answered. Say whatever you wanted to say quickly. The loft is only five blocks away. Chad tried to keep his voice level as he strove to match Sonnys rigorous pace. Remember when I dumped you? Sonny blinked, taken off guard by his blunt manner. Ive tried to forget, she answered. Do you know why I did it? Sonny was silent. I was afraid, he said, of what we could become. The media could take the fragile thing we had and rip it to innumerable shreds! Sonny rolled her eyes. Chad, cut the melodramatic act, she said dryly. He composed himself and continued. I loved to hate you so much when we secretly liked each other, that just liking you normally didnt seem quite as exciting. Plus, everyone knew. The secret was out. It was no longer any fun. So I did what I do best, I broke up with you. Sonny turned and faced him. They were at a corner, waiting to cross the street. Why are you telling me this now? Chad shrugged. Im an actor. I go with my gut instincts. Sonny rolled her eyes. Well as much as Id love to hear what your gut had to say about this whole thing, Im not really sure what your point is. Chad continued.I was really glad when you told me youd broken up with Vince. Sonny resisted the urge to slap him. Why? she asked instead in a very composed manner.
