Title: Bilateral Meeting with Turkish President Abdullah Gul View count: 358 Rating: 5.0 (2 ratings) Description: http://rtvm.gov.ph Cankaya Kosku (Presidential Palace) Ankara, Turkey 16 September 2009 President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was formally welcomed by Turkish President Abdullah Gul in their bilateral meeting at the Cankaya Kosku (Presidential Palace) at the start of her two-day visit to Ankara and Istanbul, Turkey from 16-17 September 2009. The Chief Executive was invited by President Gul as this year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Turkey. In their meeting, President Arroyo conveyed her gratitude to President Gul for Turkey's support in the Philippines' bid for an observer status within the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC). As one of the member countries in the OIC and in the Peace Committee of the Southern Philippines, Turkey has expressed its commitment for the resolution of the separatist movement in Mindanao and for the completion of the peace talks between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). The President's visit is expected to further strengthen economic relations with Turkey which is the 16th largest economy in the world. In 2008, trade volume between the two countries reached more than US$114 million, with Philippine exports to Turkey amounting to US$63 million and Philippine imports from Turkey at US$51 million. The Philippines is actively promoting for more product exports to Turkey which include the following costume / precious jewelry particularly pearls and other precious stones, fresh / processed foods such as bananas and mangoes, garments, furniture, organic chemicals and coconut products.
