Title: Autism (DIR Floortime), "Stop Sebastian!" View count: 119 Rating: 5.0 (2 ratings) Description: Continuation of the "Sad Sebastian!" video. 3 year old diagnosed with autism is engaging with mom and enjoying a little game where mom talks for his favorite bear, Sebastian. Sebastian is trying to get his blankets and the boy is telling him "No" and "Stop" while smiling at mom. He is enjoying a shared understanding of what they are playing and greatly enjoying his power to communicate and have an affect on his world as he says "stop!" and mom immediately stops for the bear. He also likes when mom tells the bear to stop to show her allegiance with him. He likes the game as well and doesn't want the game to stop. So the game continues as the mischevious bear slowly ( that is key - slow ) begins to whine again and ask for the blankets and finally food, which the boy in his new-found generousity (because of the power he feels) gives him. This play looks fairly typical - but in the past he would often ignore overtures to play, instead lining things up or obsessing on numbers as an exlusive activity. In this play he is regulated, sharing attention, engaging in a back and forth rhythm of interactions, communicating through gestures, looks and words, and entering the world of symbolic play and ideas. Check out floortime (and Play Project which uses that method) for helping your child move forward developmentally, socially, intellectually and emotionally.
