Title: Animals Raised For Food - Their Hidden Lives View count: 6651 Rating: 4.97 (36 ratings) Description: This is a short video documentary produced by the Humane Society of the United States animal welfare organization, and narrated by Hollywood movie star and animal rights advocate James Cromwell, concerning the treatment of farm animals raised for food. The modern term to refer to the process of animals raised for food, is what's known as 'factory farming' the term has been defined as :) 'a system of raising animals, using 'intensive' 'production line' methods that maximize the amount of meat and animal products produced while minimizing costs. As a result of this intensive confinement in the food production process, farm animals are denied their basic right to fully carry out their natural social and physical behaviors and as a result exhibit completely unnatural and disturbing behaviours as a result of such intensive and solitary confinement. It's estimated 50 billion animals are slaughtered annually for food around the world to feed 6.5 billion people; and this worldwide demand and profit of meat consumption has lead to shocking and completely unacceptable acts of animal abuse and cruelty, animal and human health risks and environmental damage. Most animals raised on intensive factory farms will never see the light of day, walk freely, fully stretch their wings, or engage in normal socialization with other animals. As this video states, because we hold other animals such as our companion animals cats and dogs in much higher regard then the humble cow, pig, chicken and sheep, these unsettling and upsetting abuses towards them are often 'overlooked' or are not met with much compassion sympathy or understanding from people because these gentle non-threatening farm animals are seen as a food source and nothing else. Many meat eaters would be and are shocked and appalled of this kind of treatment of farm animals and support a more humane industry of raising animals for food, and I think that's the one thing we can collectively all agree on, is that whilst we kill these animals for food we do it as humanely and with the highest code of ethics as possible. We as consumers have the power to reduce and stop these upsetting acts committed toward the great misunderstood farm animals in the food production process. Such as buying free range eggs, consuming less meat and animal products, or switching to the benefits of a vegetarian or vegan diet. These animals have thoughts, feelings, and a desire to live their natural life without being the victims of such unnecessary violence and disgusting and shameful treatment. We live in a society that makes it convenient to change the station or simply ignore something we deem unpleasant. But if we all just make a small change it will undoubtedly result in one big change, not only for farm animals, but for many other things as well.
