Title: 2009 Saratoga Special Stakes - D' Funnybone View count: 445 Rating: 5.0 (1 ratings) Description: D' Funnybone, purchased privately one month ago by top owner Paul Pompa Jr., provided an immediate return on the investment when he crushed his rivals in the $150,000 Saratoga Special (gr. II) at the Spa Aug. 20. Edgar Prado guided the Florida-bred son of D'wildcat to a 10 1/2-length victory over a field that included seven well-regarded 2-year-old rivals. The final time for the 6 1/2-furlong main track test was 1:17.58 on a track labeled 'fast' in spite of showers earlier during the program. D' Funnybone dominated maidens in his debut at Calder Race Course by 7 1/4 lengths in May, returning July 11 to post a close second in the Frank Gomez Memorial over the same track. Purchased by Pompa from trainer Joe Calascibetta for an undisclosed sum a few days after the Gomez, D' Funnybone was turned over to Rick Dutrow Jr., who has been training the chestnut colt in New York since. The first stakes victory for D' Funnybone was worth $90,000. "We punched, we got a fair price, and Rick said he was ready, and he ran," Pompa said afterward. "Edgar did a great job also. We knew there was going to be a lot of speed, and our intention was to sit off, and he executed. Thats why Edgars the best. http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/52219/saratoga-special-a-laugher-for-d-funnybone Tags: saratoga, horse, racing, tom, durkin, richard, dutrow, edgar, prado, tiny, woods, dfunnybone, Author: partymanners |
