(HD Version) - On the day that the best high school track athletes in the North Coast Section came together, three Marin athletes were crowned NCS champions. Novato's Erik Olson, Redwood's Ryan Healy and Drake's Cody Cunnington proved that they could compete with any athlete in the state, taking first place in their respective events and qualifying for next week's state meet. Though he was battling a calf injury, Cunnington fought off a 27-man field to claim victory in the pole vault. Cody's winning vault of 14 feet, 6 inches fell a full foot shorter than his personal best, but he was happy to be able to perform through the pain and take home his first NCS title. "Once I realized that my muscles weren't doing too well, my goals were to just make it to state first, then win the meet, and at last try for (the Marin record of) 15-8," Cunnington said. "It was a hamstring tweak that went down into my calf, but I powered through it.
