Rhys: ‘The Americans’ to take ‘dangerous directions’

Matthew Rhys, who plays a Russian spy pretending to be an all-American dad on “The Americans,” joins TODAY to talk about what viewers might expect in the third season of the espionage drama.

>> yes.

>> and i love this review. i recommend skipping work, ignoring your family, going directly to itunes or amazon and watching the first season binge-style while drinking vodka. the minute the show is over today.

>> we paid her a lot of money to say that.

>> so people are just starting to catch on, i think, in a lot of ways. but what is the third season sort of bringing to us?

>> to be perfectly honest, we have no idea at the moment. the writers are locked away in a small room, small darkroom, probably drinking vodka and trying to come up with exactly that, what it holes. we have a great platform. different and diverse and dangerous directions it can go. but that will be first to learn in august.

>> it's sort of a historical document in the sense of what was going on in this country. and a look at fashion as well.

>> 1980s , cold war .

>> yes. i think we've been careful not to let ' 80s fashion become its own character in the show. but yeah, it's great to have the historical backdrop as a reference to it all.

>> you are a proud welshman. we can tell by listening to you speak. but you watch that clip right there, you nail the american accent . and we have a little secret that al is going to really like about where you learned to speak with an american accent . there's a particular television show , as i understand, that you watched growing up.

>> yes. there was a few. predominantly the big one for me was " starsky & hutch ." but also "the a-team."

>> do you know the opening?

>> in 1972 , sent to prison by a military court for a crime they did not commit. these men escaped from a maximum security stockade to the los angeles underground. today surrounded by the government, they survive the soldiers of fortune . if you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the a-team.

>> you have met your match!

>> yeah!

>> a bromance has happened.

>> that is not rehearsed, we should point out.

>> that's amazing!

>> you want to go on a date? a bromance?
