Paul Simon and wife appear in court

The legendary singer and his wife, Edie Brickell, appeared in court together on Monday after a domestic dispute at their Connecticut home. NBC’s Stephanie Gosk reports.

>> reporter: paul simon and his wife edie brickell walked into the courthouse hand in hand , no sign of what police alleged took place at their connecticut home on saturday night.

>> someone called 911, hung up the telephone immediately. we sent officers to investigate, determined that there was an altercation.

>> reporter: both the grammy award -winner and his wife were arrested on misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct. in the state of connecticut , an arrest must be made if police suspect domestic violence .

>> police said physical violence.

>> if you call a slight push physical violence.

>> was there alcohol involved?

>> reporter: but in court, the couple denied that they are a threat to each other.

>> we're going to go back home today, watch our son play baseball. we had an argument, and it's atypical of us. neither one of us has any fear or any reason to feel threatened.

>> reporter: simon is 72 years old and brickell 48, have been married for more than 20 years. what i am is what i am

>> reporter: she had a successful album herself in the late '80s and in court seemed to smile at the suggestion that she wasn't safe with her husband.

>> he isn't a threat to me at all.

>> the judge denied the state's request for a limited protective order . the couple will be back in court may 13th . for "today," stephanie gosk, nbc news, new york.
