>>> now to stunning new video that surfaced showing a very large gathering of al qaeda militants, more than 100 of them meeting in yemen . among them, the number two leader in the organization. let's bring in richard engel , nbc's chief foreign correspondent. was this a missed opportunity by the u.s.?

>> it may have been. u.s. officials will not say if they were monitoring this gathering in realtime. but it does show that al qaeda militants in yemen are incredibly bold. and i think this should be a wake-up call that they can get together in such large numbers out in the open with the number two al qaeda member and not worry that there could be an air strike or a drone attack. what's also disturbing is that these large gatherings are taking place regularly. this one was in yemen , but in syria. i think we should definitely be worried about syria. it has become, in my opinion, more dangerous than afghanistan was before 9/11.

>> all right, richard engel , thank
