>>> let's get now to the trip down under for the duke and duchess of cambridge and little prince george . this morning he took part in his first official royal engagement and it was a play date. here's nbc's sarah james .
>> reporter: it was a pint-sized royal engagement, but a big step for a future king still crawling. it's the role for which he was born. prince george showed no hint of jet lag , holding the floor and impressing the sole american parent in the group.
>> he's a lovely little boy . he's very intrepid.
>> reporter: the center of a gaggle of babies too young to be star truck by his royal credentials. all ten closen because they live in new zealand.
>> did you meet prince charming ?
>> i did.
>> was it great?
>> reporter: little amelia howe refused to reveal state secrets .
>> as she bit in, she put it down because it hurt her. the prince might have picked it up.
>> reporter: her parents say on this day, the duke and duchess of cambridge were just mom and dad .
>> can you tell me about kate, about meeting the duchess?
>> i'm kind of in awe, to actually speak to her on a one-on-one level. she's so down to earth and she was actually genuinely interested in amelia's welfare.
>> reporter: while george has become used to riding in the back seat, it was his parents who took the back seat at today's event. similar to his father 30 years ago when he came to new zealand and australia on his first overseas tour. he's wowed the crowds at his birth. was adored by family and close friends at his christening. and in his first public royal engagement, baby george 's performance earned him a rating of prince charming , all before his first birthday. for "today," sarah james , nbc news, wellington.
