Billy Crystal: ‘I was a Mr. Mom when it wasn’t cool’

The actor joins TODAY to talk about Mets star Daniel Murphy, who missed baseball games to attend the birth of his child. “I thought he was totally right,” says Crystal, saying being a stay-at-home-dad to his daughter “was the best time of my life.”

>> it's opening day for the yankees home opener. that's not what i want to talk about. i want to talk about last week's opener for the mets. okay? we had a little daniel murphy controversy. took not one, but two games off because his wife gave birth. he's entitled to three days off for paternity leave . he got blasted on sports radio . you are not only a fan of the game, a student of the game, but you're an evolved man. what do you think about this?

>> i thought it was totally right. he actually caught the baby as it came out. [ laughter ]

>> perfect.

>> come on! let's go. let's go. come on, come on.

>> he did have a role.

>> they needed his skills.

>> listen, i was a mr. mom back when it wasn't cool. and i talk about it in the show, back in 1970 -- well, my daughter. and i did that for a year and a half and it was the best time of my life . and it forever bonded us. this is a father with his child. so who was upset with him?

>> mike francesco.

>> what's he doing? what's he doing? al, you're on from t-net.

>> not exactly the brightest bulb.

>> it's not just the mother's job. she did the most difficult thing in bringing the baby into the world, so he's there, he should be.

>> absolutely.

>> did they lose the two games that he missed?

>> yes.

>> well, now it's stupid. [ laughter ]

>> somebody said hey, by the way, you play for the mets. it's not going to matter.
