William, Kate and George head Down Under

Prince William, Duchess Kate and Prince George are headed to Australia and New Zealand for a three-week visit. it’s their first official tour as a family, and a chance to see the sights, spread goodwill and show off one of the world’s most famous babies. NBC’s Duncan Golestani reports.

>>> the duke and duchess of cambridge are in the air this morning on their way for their first official trip as a family overseas with baby prince george . the royal family will spend two weeks in new zealand and australia. it's full of public events to spread royal good will. duncan goll stan any is outside buckingham palace with more.

>> reporter: good morning. this will be a busy 18-day tour for the duke and duchess , lots of memorable moments. we'll suddenly see a whole lot more of baby prince george . until now he's been kept away from public view. it's kind of hard to up stage the duke and deutsche es when they head overseas. this royal tour you can bet on one little man grabbing all the attention. the last time prince george was seen in public was at his christening six months ago. since then he's only been glimpsed in this official photo. even then we only got a side view. the heir to the throne was more interested in the family dog .

>> his first overseas tour, hugely significant for him.

>> reporter: mum is making sure he'll be looking his best. she was last week snapped shopping at baby gap . a big overseas tour raises the style stakes.

>> when she goes on tour, she also wears local designers. we can expect to see some australian and new zealand designers turning up in her wardrobe.

>> she'll need plenty of outfits. the tour starts tonight in new zealand before moving to australia. it's the kind of trip the queen no longer makes, this week visiting pope francis in rome, her first foreign trip in two years. increasingly the duke and kuch es are taking center stage taking part in events close to their hearts from helping young people to honoring veterans. royal tours can also be fun. expect to see kate and william back on the wart t. tour will undoubtedly bring back memories of princess diana when she and charles took a young prince william down under more than 30 years ago. diana insisted she would not be parted from prince william . back then it was a real break from tradition. now it seems perfectly right or normal. kate and william will have some time on their own because they plan some romantic nights together.
