Will Barbara Bush let her son paint her? ‘Absolutely not’

Former first lady Barbara Bush joins TODAY to chat about her son, former President George W. Bush, and his new painting hobby. She gives thumbs up to a portrait he did of his father: “He’s good.” But when asked if she'll sit for a portrait herself, she says, "Absolutely not."

>> mrs. bush, we're going to put it up on the screen. you have not seen it up until this moment. let us put the portrait of your husband up that your son painted. what do you think?

>> that's my husband? i really like it.

>> come on!

>> i really like it.

>> did he get to the sole of gamps?

>> i think maybe he did. maybe he did.

>> you like it?

>> i like it. i like it very much.

>> mrs. bush, was this something that really shocked you? or did you think, oh, you know, there was a time when he was a little boy where he loved to paint or loved art?

>> george, i'm not going to answer that question. no. no.

>> you never knew.

>> you and i know.

>> you never knew he liked to paint, right, gan?

>> never knew. george and i know, but he is -- he's good.

>> he is good. so this is his favorite painting he's ever painted, what's your favorite?

>> i like the ones he painted of the two dogs. the great big one and the little one. and i like the one very much he gave me that he told me i had to put on the back. this goes back to george w. when i die. i did not put that on the back.

>> mrs. bush, he's afraid to ask you, but he would like you to pose for a portrait. will you do that?

>> absolutely not. as good as he is, it might look like me.

>> well, thank you for getting up early and commenting on this portrait. we know you're supporting. i'll take the news back to dad you like it.

>> you mean this is it? i got up at 4:30 for this?

>> what else do you have to tell us? we can chat all day.

>> only for you. only for you.

>> mrs. bush, what a pleasure to see you. thank you very much.

>> you know i haven't seen you, matt before -- after 7:00 in the morning. twice i've gotten up for jenna.

>> that's right. the last time we saw each other was at your son's library. it's a pleasure to see you again.

>> before 7:00.

>> thank you so much again. nice to see you.

>> nice to see you, too.

>> love you.

>> love you too, jen.

>> and that pup right next to you.

>> there she is.
