>> good morning, everyone. there was a late surge of customers monday who signed up for health care insurance as the obama administration hit the original goal before the midnight deadline. nbc's white house correspondent peter alexander with the latest. good morning.

>> reporter: hi, tamron. good morning to you. as first reported by the "associated press," the administration is on track to sign up 7 million people through last night's midnight deadline. that's largely due to the late surge. officials this morning tell me 4.8 million people went to the website yesterday, that is four times more than the previous record in any one day. 7 million sign-ups, as you know, that was the administration's initial goal, but after the website problems and glitches, experts thought that number was out of reach. the white house even feared the law might collapse. there were more tech issues yesterday, but the white house is allowing anybody who was trying, and that's a loose word, trying, tamron, to sign up in the next several days.
