GM announces new recalls

General Motors is apologizing as it faces four serious safety recalls. More than 1.5 million vehicles are involved; they may have defective side airbags, and some could have brake pump issues. NBC’s Gabe Gutierrez reports.

>> reporter: this morning, gm is facing four serious safety recalls and many more questions.

>> i probably wouldn't buy a gm car.

>> reporter: the car maker just announced a trio of recalls that includes more than 1.5 million vehicles. chevy traverses and saturn outlooks, all with potentially defective side air bags . plus, newer cadillac stss with concerns that it could lead to an engine fire. and south ameriavannahs because they say they do not meet head impact requirements. it's not connected to the 1.6 million cars recalled last month because of ignition switch problems linked to at least 12 deaths.

>> terrible things happened. as a member of the gm family and a mom with a family of my own, this hits home for me. we have apologized. but that is just one step in the journey to resolve this.

>> a journey that will include a criminal investigation into gm's ignition switch problem and congressional hearings next month. pledged to cooperate fully and many are still loyal.

>> it doesn't shake my confidence in them at all.
