49 states hit temps below freezing

Temperatures plunge below zero in many areas as the country goes into a deep freeze. Ice jams continue to cover rivers across the nation as 49 states reach below the freezing mark. TODAY’s Al Roker reports.

>> that's right, he's along the icy river. what's like where you?

>> we're about a hundred miles north, we're in the middle of the hudson river on "the penobscot." you get petroleum, barges, grain, up and down this river. this ship has to keep these lanes open. this is a physical manifestation of what we've been talking about this winter. let's show what you we're talking about. temperatures right now, we see temperatures currently in the northeast and actually into the midwest into are currently 9 below, 10 below in bismarck, 27 in d.c. and up in maine, 1 degree. we've got 3 degrees right here and guess what? you'd like winter to be over? it ain't done bay long shot. in upstate new york , we're talking whiteout conditions on i-81. across the country the big question everyone's asking when does winter leave?

>> this weather needs to end, oh, my gosh.

>> this morning 49 states across the country dealing with subfreezing temperatures, hawaii the one exception.

>> your fingers feel like they're going to break off.

>> god is testing us.

>> this satellite shows the great lakes in september. now they're more than 75% frozen, lake superior almost completely covered in ice. ice jams continue to clog rivers. in ohio, along the sandusky river , big boulders of ice taking offer the parking lots.

>> this is just what we ordered, the sun. in some places the ice is more than a foot thick. that's the kingston bring and i have to tell you, it's going to be rough. folks, this is the work that they do to keep these shipping lanes open. hold on a second, big boy . let me move that for you. here comes a big ol' barge up along the river and that thing is why they do this job. okay, let's show you what's going on. as far as our temperatures are concerned, we are not looking at any kind of a break for at least the next 24 to 72 hours . look at the core of the cold air. tomorrow move 6 below in new york city , washington 17 and as you make your way out west , look at those temperatures, 30 degrees below normal, green bay 14, minneapolis 9, indianapolis 4. and you can see that tug pushing the rtc-103 up toward albany, new york and it continues to do that. now, guys, in just a little bit we're going to talk about what's going on out west but, again, brutally cold temperatures.
