Eavesdropping scandal rocks Russia and US

Just as the Olympic Games are getting underway, the U.S. is suggesting that Russia listened in on official calls made by top U.S. diplomat Victoria Nuland. NBC’s Andrea Mitchell reports.

>> reporter: the target of the electronic snooping is victoria newlan. not your tea and crumpets kind of diplomat, now they may have gotten even. the audio of her private conversation was posted on youtube and quickly tweeted by russia 's government. in the call, nuland used the "f" word to dismiss inaction of the inaction on the eu.

>> and, you know, [ bleep ] the eu.

>> the video was first noted and tweeted out by the russian government . i think it says something about russia 's role.

>> russian tv news suggested nuland was meddling in their affairs. one report compared nuland to hillary clinton , not a favorite of vladimir putin 's government.

>> nuland was promoted to top u.s. diplomat in europe. now it could be a lot harder for her to do her job.

>> this is a new low in russian trade craft.
