Michael Schumacher improving slightly after ski accident

Doctors say the Formula One racing legend who suffered a critical head injury skiing in the French Alps is showing signs of improvement, though they caution it’s too early to make speculations. An investigation is being conducted at the site of the accident where initial reports say the impact of Schumacher’s fall shattered his helmet.

>> reporter: good morning. doctors have been working around the clock to save the life of one of europe's most famous athletes. in a press conference this morning, doctors treating michael schumacher say the racing legend is showing small signs of improvement.

>> the ct scan today is better and the situation, the clinical situation is a bit improved compared to yesterday.

>> reporter: schumacher underwent a second operation since his ski accident sunday. he was skiing with his 14-year-old son in an ungroomed area of the resort when he fell striking his head on a rock. a team of doctors performed immediate brain surgery upon his arrival at a nearby hospital. [ speaking foreign language ]

>> reporter: schumacher was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash which doctors credit for giving him a chance at surviv survival. he's the most decorated driver in formula one history winning 91 races in just 18 active years. on monday schumacher 's family released a statement on his website saying, in part, we would like to thank the people from around the world who have expressed their sympathy and sent their best wishes for his recovery. they are giving us great support. in addition to the efforts at the hospital, an investigation is also being conducted at the site of the accident. official reports are that the impact was so severe that it shattered schumacher 's helmet.
