Manhunt over after suspected robber shot dead

A nationwide manhunt may be over, following what the FBI says was a string of bank robberies from Georgia to Mississippi to Arizona. NBC’s Kristen Dahlgren reports.

>> this is a massive manhunt. three bank robberies in three states. one police officer shot and killed, another wounded. it seems the suspect's crime spree has come to an end. the fbi say they believe this is the suspect they've been searching for, a man seen here in a black face mask and patterned jacket, the same clothing worn in two separate robberies last monday, almost 300 miles apart.

>> the bank surveillance photos are a dead-on match.

>> reporter: officials say the suspect robbed a bank of america in atlanta monday morning armed with a semi- automatic handgun , first demanding money from a teller. when unsuccessful, the suspect approached a customer at an atm making off with an undisclosed amount of cash. that afternoon police say the same man robbed a tupelo bank shooting and killing a police officer and wounding the officer's partner in what is being called an ambush-style attack.

>> he seemed to have gotten into a firing position or firing stance similar to someone that has a background in tactics.

>> reporter: then overnight the fibl released a statement saying they believe the same suspect was killed in a shootout with a police officer after trying to rob a bank on saturday in phoenix, arizona. more than 1,800 miles from where they think the wave of armed robberies started nearly a week ago.

>> authorities still haven't released any details on the suspect's identity. we should learn more later today. meantime that slain officer in tupelo was 38 years old. his wife said he died, lester, doing what he loved.
