>> big top story this morning. it has to do with christmas two of the nation's biggest pack ang shippers, ups and fedex failing to deliver on time. gabe gutierrez is following this story from atlanta. good morning to you.
>> reporter: savannah, good morning. here and across the country, fedex and ups trucks are hitting the roads. they say the bad weather and higher demand was just overwhelming. it was supposed to be over, but today the mad rush is back on. ups and fedex rushing to clear a backlog of packages to mad customers who didn't get their gifts in time for christmas .
>> i bought my package.
>> reporter: they blame it on weeks on bad weather and storming u.s. sales. this month a u.s. manager told us this.
>> if you pick it up on the 23rd, the next day service, well get it to you by christmas .
>> but now many customers like sarah in virginia aren't laughing. she paid for rush delivery, but her family's presents never made it.
>> it was definitely a little disheartening not to be able to share gifts with others, when all the gifrts were being opened.
>> reporter: many more customers sounded off on social media , one wrote ups stands for undelivered parcel shiplet. one said the volume of air packages in our system exceeded the capacity of our network. we apologize, fedex is calling it an extraordinary event.
>> i guess the benefit was christmas is going to last longer. we will have more gifts to open in a couple days.
>> reporter: meanwhile, online retailers are taking a bit of a hit on this one. amazon.com says the process is all ordered on time, amazon is compensating some customers with $20 gift card and refunds on shipping charges. savannah.
>> what a night. this happened to you?
>> i got a card from my dad. i opened the card. there was nothing in the card. it said ups is on its way. this happens to a lot of people. i can understand why.
>> a big gift for christmas .
