Woman ‘heard screaming’ during theater collapse

Investigators are trying to figure out what caused a ceiling to collapse at a London theater Thursday. At least 80 people were injured; thankfully, there were no fatalities. NBC’s Jim Maceda reports.

>> that's right. this happened in london in the theater district last night when it crashed sending debris on those below. dozens were injured and some seriously and today lots of questions on how this happened. jim is in london with more.

>> reporter: some thought it might be part of the play when people in the front row suddenly ran to the exits. she was in a balcony seat.

>> somebody was screaming and somebody went look out and the ceiling collapsed.

>> reporter: debris reigned down as 700 people watched the performance of the curious incident of the dog in the nighttime triggering chaos and panic. amazingly there were no fatalities. most had head wounds like this man, momentarily struck unconscious.

>> the next thing i know i was in the foyer.

>> reporter: firemen quickly found the source of the collapse.

>> it has been confined to heavy ornate plastery.

>> reporter: it was on a roll with packed houses every night until this. officials say they carried out a structural assessment overnight and will release an initial report today. while one of the most popular theaters remains shut.
