>> we reported about a nasty cheney family feud . it's gone public. it's between the daughters of former vice president dick cheney . mary cheney is gay. she took to facebook to criticize her sister liz's stance on gay marriage . now for the first time on camera dick cheney himself is taking sides.

>> we, you know -- we were surprised when there was an attack launched against liz on facebook and wished it hadn't happened. it's always been dealt with within the context of the family and, frankly, that's our preferences.

>> he called the rift a difficult thing for his family and when the interviewer tried to press him further on that subject he said do not waste your time. it's hard because it is a personal family feud but it is a subject so much in the headlines in this country right now.

>> and to happen in the context of a political campaign so now it's become fair game .
