Wife of vet detained in N. Korea: We want him home

Merrill Newman, an 85-year-old Korean War veteran, is being detained in North Korea after taking a vacation trip there. His wife Lee hasn’t spoken with him in a month and says she and her family want him home for the holidays.

>> it's hard for his grand children. it's hard for his whole family.

>> reporter: lee newman hasn't seen her husband in six weeks.

>> when you don't know where your husband of 56 years is. you don't know if he's healthy. you don't know if he'll be home with us, it's not an easy situation.

>> an 85-year-old korean war veteran, he was detained in north korea after a 10- day trip to the peninsula where he once fought.

>> he needs to be back at home.

>> reporter: after a handful of phone calls and postcards newman boarded a flight home way friend when his family said he was suddenly pulled off the plane by a military official.

>> there's some terrible misunderstanding taking place here.

>> reporter: newman 's son said there was only one indication of any trouble. there was a conversation that took place about the korean war and my dad's service. might have had tension in it. n newman is in need of medication. they're working with interests in north korea but so far no one has spoken to or seen the 85-year-old.

>> he just needs to be home and we want him home for the holidays .
