US citizen charged with trying to join al Qaeda

A North Carolina man has been arrested on charges of aiding terrorists. According to the FBI, the 29-year old man wanted to join al Qaeda rebels fighting in the Syrian civil war.

>> good morning, natalie. it may seem surprising that at the same time the u.s. is aiding rebels in syria , it's arresting people in the u.s. that want to help them. the federal prosecutors say a legal permanent resident from pakistan wanted to join an al qaeda affiliated group in syria . he was arrested at the raleigh raleigh- durham airport . from there he was planning to get to syria . he wanted to join up with a group which the u.s. describes as a terror organization affiliated with al qaeda . the fbi says he didn't hide his desire to fight with the rebels and posted messages and pictures about it on facebook.
