Alleged LAX shooter in critical condition

Officials say 23-year-old Paul Ciancia targeted NSA employees when he entered Los Angeles International airport and allegedly began shooting Friday. NBC’s Miguel Almaguer reports.

>> the shooter in the deadly attack at los angeles airport . miguel almaguer is at l.a.x. good morning to you.

>> reporter: good morning. this is where it all happened inside terminal three. the suspect was dropped off and walked in the terminal with a bag of ammunition, five rounds of magazines, as well as a rifle when he opened fire. this morning inside terminal three there's little sign of friday's terror. 23-year-old paul ciancia walked inside the terminal with this assault rifle , plenty of ammo, a plan to kill and a note for police.

>> in that note, he indicated his anger and his malice, i would say, toward the tsa officers.

>> reporter: according to a federal criminal complaint, ciancia fired multiple rounds at point blank range at officer hernandez . ciancia proceeded up an escalator but when hernandez appeared to move he returned to shoot him again.

>> he he was a great man that always showed his love for our family.

>> reporter: with his wife and two children, hernandez was going to celebrate his 40th birthday this week. instead, his family is planning a funeral.

>> i am truly devastated. we are all heart broken and will miss him dearly.

>> we have a tsa officer shot.

>> reporter: with hernandez down, the gunman is on the move. police say he shoots and wounds tsa officers and high school teacher brian ludmer is also hit.

>> reporter: the suspect made his way down this long corridor. according to some reports he went up to witnesses and said tsa? they shook their head no and the suspect kept going.

>> in 60 seconds , police corner ciancia shooting him multiple times and at least once in the head. we now know ciancia lived in los angeles for over a year. law enforcement sources tell nbc news he purchased two guns from a target range not far from his home but those that knew him say they never saw this coming.

>> i received this call and he said to me that i can't believe what i'm seeing on tv. is this true? is this my son involved in a shooting? and she replied i heard the same thing.

>> reporter: this morning ciancia is in crocidolite citical condition. he is estranged from his father but said to sent his brother a text message saying he was going to commit suicide before the shooting. he also mentioned the nwo, a conspiracy theory about a totalian government.
