Teen saved after being wedged between buildings

Asher Vongtau, 19, is recovering after reportedly falling into a narrow shaft and spending more than a day wedged between two buildings in Lower Manhattan. Campus security officials discovered the NYU student on Sunday night and he is in critical but stable condition. NBC’s Rehema Ellis reports.

>> reporter: the 19-year-old is recovering this morning after spending more than a day trapped in a tight space between two buildings in lower manhattan . he went missing saturday morning after a fire alarm was pulled. the nyu student reportedly fell into the narrow shaft way between his dorm and a parking garage on saturday morning. he was discovered by campus security last night. more than 24 hours later after receiving a tip from one of his friends.

>> the last person who saw him saw that he was headed upstairs and we went to security and we said, you need to go to the roof.

>> reporter: fire crews cut through a wall to rescue the man from a space less than 2 feet wide. it took them nearly two hours to get the student out. this photo tweeted shows the aftermath. it's still unclear how he became stuck or how long he was trapped.

>> they're trying to determine how many stories he found buchlt he is conscious and alive and being transported to the nearest hospital.

>> reporter: the student is listed in critical but stable condition and he is talking. officials hope he'll soon be able to reveal how this ordeal happened. natalie.
