Book: Obama considered replacing Biden with Clinton

Political journalists Mark Halperin and John Heilemann reveal little-known secrets of the 2012 presidential election in their new book, “Double Down,” including reports that President Obama’s top aides considered replacing VP Joe Biden with Hillary Clinton in the run-up to the 2012 election.

>> a lot of people in washington talking this morning. a new book claims top aids to the president, president obama , gave serious consideration to replacing vice president joe biden on the 2012 ticket. andrea mitchell has details on that. tell us what you know.

>> reporter: good morning, matt. three years ago their book changed the game with revelations ranging from sarah palin 's private melt down to john edward 's very public one. well, now they're back again about to release their chronicle of the 2012 campaign which includes another tale of upheaval over running mates. in late 2011 as republican front runners traded place, the president's team considered a high profile swap of its own replacing vice president biden with hilary clinton . nbc news confirms that bill daily went so far as to secretly poll how voters might react but learned it wouldn't improve obama 's chances. but the campaign did shut biden out of strategy sessions after he preempted obama 's plan to endorse same-sex marriage after doing it on meet the press.

>> he tweeted never any any consideration of vp switch. not only entertained by the only person that mattered. a year before the election savannah asked clinton about the rumors.

>> is there any chance you would be vice president in the second term?

>> no.

>> is it in the realm of possibility?

>> i don't think it's even in the realm of possibility.

>> mr. obama was even more resistant. the pair of presidents rarely spoke in the first term and when they made a public attempt to bond over golf they didn't even finish 18 holes. i like him in doses obama told an aid. even worse was the praise for mitt romney 's business experience.

>> a man that has a business career crosses the qualification threshold.

>> reporter: but he turned to him after the first debate and at the democratic convention .

>> you must reelect president barack obama .

>> reporter: the office reports that the new jersey governor was less than forth coming about his medical history and work as a lobbyiest. the garden state governor's background was littered with potential land mines . christie aid got the romney camp to say christie complied fully with all requests including the medical reports. so the book is already setting off sparks for the next campaign. matt and savannah, you have an interview with the authors themselves on monday.
