Rielle Hunter apologizes for Edwards affair

With a new book, the woman involved in John Edwards’ extramarital affair is changing her tone toward  the events that ended the senator’s political career, apologizing for her actions and her remarks toward Edwards’ wife. NBC News Lisa Myers reports.

>> reporter: good morning, matt. she has briselled at the aaccepti perception that she is a home wrecker but now she says that's exactly what she was saying, i behaved badly.

>> it's a great speech.

>> can you read it?

>> yes, i can read it.

>> reporter: it was a love affair that lasted on and off for at least six years. produced a daughter, quinn, destroyed john edward 's political career, and left him facing criminal charges associated with covering it up. days after he was found not guilty hunter unveiled this book in which she admitted a few mistakes but largely defended her behavior.

>> i don't regret falling in love and i don't regret loving him, nor do i regret our daughter.

>> reporter: but now, 16 months later, hunter has changed her tune. i am very sorry for my wrong, selfish behavior. back in 2006 , i did not think about the scope of my actions, how my falling in love with john edwards and acting on that love could hurt so many people. she also apologized for parts of her book in which she referred to edward's late wife elizabeth as venemous.

>> did that make you mad?

>> i thought it was a poor choice is all i can say.

>> reporter: instead of apologizing when i should have, i went on to hurt more people. i made more mistakes. ones i feel horrible about. hunters book was just reissued as an e-book with annotations in brackets about things she wishes she hadn't said or done. she said she never meant to hurt anyone and believes infidelity was wrong. i was thoughtless and selfish and i am sorry. so far reaction to hunter's apology on social media is overwhelming positive which may come to a shock to someone that has been villified for so long.
