Aaron Hernandez indicted for 1st-degree murder

A grand jury has indicted former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandezon a first-degree murder charge in the death of his friend Odin Lloyd.NBC’s John Yang reports.

>> developments in the case of aaron hernandez , he has been indicted for first-degree murder charges and weapons charges. john yang is in north dartmouth, massachusetts . good morning.

>> good morning. aaron hernandez has been held here in the bristol county jail . but this morning he wakes up under indictment for premeditated murder .

>> entering the court he mouthed i love you to someone in the courtroom as he has done before. that was hours after a grand jury indicted him for first-degree murder and five weapons charges in the june killing of odin lloyd , a semipro football player.

>> we wanted to present as much evidence to the grand jury as we could before we asked for the vote. that's what we did.

>> reporter: defense attorneys called the prosecutions case weak and said hernandez would be cleared at a trial.

>> we do not believe they have sufficient evidence to carry the burden before the jury. that's the day we look forward to.

>> reporter: even as the new england patriots who cut hernandez after his arrest play a preseason game. hernandez 's attorney says he is doing as well as expected.

>> he understands what's in front of him and he is committed to cleerg his name.

>> reporter: hernandez and two other men drove lloyd to an industrial park here hernandez 's massachusetts home. that's where lloyd 's body was found beaten and shot multiple time. officials say a boston grand jury is looking into hernandez 's possible involvement in other crime. law enforcement sources say those include the murders of two men shot and killed in their car late at night . no charges have been filed or suspects named. he told maria in april that he tried to project a positive imagine.

>> reporter: there's no death penalty here in massachusetts . his next court appearance will be in the next three weeks.
