>> reporter: good morning. researchers say the nation's 100 working nuclear reactors are not prepared to defend against a terrorist attack on the scale of 911. 12 years later they're vulnerable to similarly organized by attacks by a ground force , by a ship sitting offshore from a reactor or a hijacked plane that could crash into a reactor causing a melt down. the nuclear industry says it dramatically beefed up security and successfully doing it would be difficult in need. 116 million americans live within 50 miles of a reactor including from boston to new york, miami to chicago, new orleans to san diego .
