>> reporter: good morning. they were walking to dinner in east africa when men through acid in their faces. several people have been arrested. nobody knows why these two innocent teens were targeted. arriving by ambulance, this wasn't how the two teenagers were supposed to end their trip of a lifetime. 18-year-old's covered their burned bodies with sheets. on their feet, they were wearing sandals. for the family, this is a devastating homecoming. how is she?

>> they were walking to dinner on the island when men on a motorcycle threw acid in their faces. a picture shows burns across the chest and neck of one of the girls. they were on a three week trip volunteering as teachers. last week, katie tweeted after meeting bill clinton visiting the island. around the world, 1500 acid attacks reported each year. the victims are mainly women and girls. there are fears this could be part of rising religious tension in the mainly muslim country . katie told friends she was assaulted in the street for singing during ramadan.

>> reporter: the islands rely on tourism. the attacks could stop people from visiting. the government is promising to take care of those responsible and offering a reward for information. doctors say the girls are doing well. it might be thanks to the quick response of locals who dragged her down to
