Zimmerman friend takes the stand

Mark Osterman took the stand in George Zimmerman’s second-degree murder trial on Tuesday, calling Zimmerman the “best friend I’ve ever had” and testifying about what Zimmerman told him the night of the shooting. NBC’s Kerry Sanders reports.

>> reporter: the day after george zimmerman shot and killed 17-year-old trayvon martin he described what happened in this police video tape.

>> he just kept slamming.

>> reporter: but in court tuesday a medical examiner that analyzed the photos of zimmerman told the juror the injuries were not life threatening.

>> if you look at the injuries, they're so minor.

>> reporter: she testified as an expert witness for the prosecution saying zimmerman 's injuries were not consistent with his head being repeatedly slammed into the sidewalk.

>> using the word slam implies great force and this -- the resulting injuries are not great force.

>> reporter: but on cross-examination, zimmerman 's defense lawyer asked the doctor if the injuries could have come from multiple impacts.

>> anything that would medically exclude that the right side was hit four times.

>> it's possible.

>> reporter: also on the stand tuesday, mark.

>> best friend i ever had.

>> reporter: he wrote a book about what he says his best friend george zimmerman told him the night of the shooting.

>> do you recall if he told you that martin touched the gun or was reaching for it.

>> i thought he said he had grabbed the gun.

>> reporter: the jury also saw an interview that aired on fox news last year.

>> and tonight in an interview that you will only see --

>> reporter: george zimmerman was asked if he regrets having a gun that night.

>> i feel that it was all god's plan and for me to second guess it or judge it --

>> is there anything you might do differently in retrospect now that time has passed a little bit?

>> no, sir.

>> reporter: in that interview, george zimmerman says he knew nothing about florida 's stand your ground law but prosecutors believe records from his college will show otherwise. george zimmerman pled not guilty saying that he shot and killed trayvon martin in self-defense.
