SCOTUS expected to reveal hotly anticipated decisions

The Supreme Court will start announcing some of the most anticipated decisions of the term as early as today, including the challenge to Proposition 8 in California, which ended same-sex marriage in the state, and the fate of the Voting Rights Act. NBC’s Pete Williams reports.

>> say the least, matt. it's a historic ruling at the supreme court with big decisions of this term being announced. pete williams have more. pete, we talked a lot about the enthusiasm, for lack of a better description, surrounding this day. good morning.

>> reporter: it's going to be a dramatic week and we'll start getting the decision as early as today. one is a challenge to proposition 8 in california that ended same sex marriage in that state. another is the defense of marriage act passed in 1996 . it bars the government from recognizing same-sex marriage in the state where is they're legal. it's the most important civil rights law ever passed. it says state with a history of discrimination have to get the federal government before elections.

>> and they'll test the ability to colleges to use affirmative action. a racially diverse campus provides a better education for everybody. so the first decision is today and later today we'll find out when in the rest of the week we will get more.
