Family members gather at Mandela’s hospital room

Nelson Mandela, 94, remains hospitalized with a lung infection as his daughter, ex-wife, and other family members pay him visits. NBC’s Keir Simmons reports from Pretoria, South Africa, where security at the hospital is being increased.

>> reporter: good morning. we have seen more police officers overnight. we think sit in order to protect nelson mandela and to protect those visiting him. we have seen one of his daughter as arrive here. she has been here every day since she was brought to the hospital. we have seen his ex-wife come here. we believe to visit him. one of his daughter who is is now south africa 's ambassador to argentina is flying back here to be at the hospital and his current wife hasn't been seen since saturday. we think she is by his bedside. you get a sense, matt, of the family gathering around this father of the nation , surrounded by children and grand children as doctors continue to administer intensive care and there is no news of his improvement. i just want to read you a statement from the former arch bishop, former nobel prize winner. he is saying we are praying for nelson mandela 's government and dignity and offer thanks to god for the extraordinary gift of mr. mandela and wish strength to his family, matt.
