Wash. bridge collapses, 2 vehicles plunge into river

A large portion of the 57-year-old Skagit River Bridge north of Seattle fell into the rushing river below Thursday evening, sending two vehicles into the frigid waters. KING TV’s Chris Daniels reports.

>> breaking news out of seattle, a bridge collapse just north of seattle, let's get to chris daniels from king 5 with the latest. good morning to you.

>> reporter: good morning, savannah. this is the major freeway through washington state now disconnected. the wreckage and vehicles still sit in the river behind me this morning after officials here say a truck smacked into part of the bridge . it was just after 7:00 p.m . when a major portion of the 57-year-old skagit river bridge fell into the river below . investigators believe a truck struck the bridge .

>> the semi struck the overhead of the bridge causing the collapse.

>> rescuers scrambled to help save the people from the wreckage.

>> i looked at the current going through the girders and the men and women involved to rescue the three people from the water was extraordinary.

>> dan slye and his wife were in the vehicles.

>> when you looked at all the carnage of the metal and around you i assumed that was it at that point, there was no hope, that's what i was thinking, but here i stand, by god.

>> reporter: his wife and the other rescued man remain hospitalized with hypothermia, it is the most significant bridge failure since the 2007 minneapolis bridge collapse that left 13 people dead and dozens injured, snarling traffic for months. meanwhile officials in washington or looking into exactly why the bridge collapsed saying it could be months before it's fixed. the i-5 skagit river bridge is the main corridor connecting the u.s. and canada. the detours could last among beyond the memorial day weekend .
