Fire trucks race to White House after report of smoke

According to the Secret Service, the West Wing of the White House was evacuated after smoke was seen in a mechanical room. NBC’s Peter Alexander reports.

>>> all right. we got word a little while ago the fire trucks had showed up at the white house . what was that all about?

>> reporter: it happened just shortly after we said hello to you. in the last hour we saw multiple fire trucks quickly racing over here to the white house . they are now beginning to clear out. this was a fire emergency. according to the secret service there was smoke seen in a mechanical room of the west wing , the west wing was actually evacuated. some of the secret service agents who were manning the doors told one of my colleagues, who was in the reporters' area, the media area , they had to get out, that there was smoke there. we are told by the secret service they're still assessing it. at this point they believe there was no injuries and the president and his family were not affected.
