Kim Kardashian blasted for pregnancy fashion

Reality star Kim Kardashian is a fashion icon to many, but at six months pregnant her maternity style has been enduring ridicule. Some are asking if it’s fair to criticize a pregnant woman’s weight gain. NBC’s Michelle Franzen reports.

>> reporter: kim kardashian is known for her voluptuous curves, but now they're grabbing headlines for all the wrong reasons.

>> kim cannot get away from this controversy.

>> reporter: ridiculed for her too tight maternity style, the nearly six months pregnant reality star has even been compared to a killer whale . maternity wear designer rosie pope thinks it's unfair.

>> it's really healthy to put on between 25 and 35 pounds and i think it's one thing to comment on her clothing and her fashion because she is a fashion icon but completely another and totally inappropriate to comment on her weight.

>> reporter: so, celebrity or not, does fat shaming a pregnant woman simply go too far?

>> we saw it with jessica simpson . now we're seeing it with kim kardashian . just because somebody is a celebrity does into the mean it is okay to completely bash them.

>> reporter: some worry it's sending women the wrong message.

>> i think it's important to send a positive message that as long as, you know, she's comfortable and she's happy and healthy, that that's what's important.

>> reporter: the bullying culture goes way too far and it's becoming dangerous even with celebrities.

>> kim kardashian !

>> reporter: as for kim, she fired back this week on "the tonight show " with jay leno .

>> i want the rest of my life -- i'll have the rest of my life to be skinny and lose weight and i'm not worried about it. if i have a craving i go for it. i obviously want to be healthy for the baby and myself so i'm not overdoing it.

>> i think we have become so weight obsessed in society we are forgetting she is growing a human being in front of her and this is to be an incredibly celebratory time in her life.
