John Kerry makes surprise visit to Kabul

The secretary of state arrived in Kabul this morning just a day after another unannounced visit to Baghdad. Kerry plans to meet with Afghanistan’s president Hamid Karzai to discuss political and security issues. NBC’s Andrea Mitchell reports.

>>> breaking news in afghanistan this morning. secretary of state john kerry is making an unannounced visit to the capital city of kabul after visiting iraq on sunday. nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell is traveling with the secretary, good morning to you.

>> reporter: good morning, secretary kerry has just arrived, it was a very difficult relationship afghan's president karz karzai . officials on the plane say that kerry knows him well, has seen him five times, been to afghanistan five times when he was a senator and the reason they can get past the friction of when karzai told secretary of defense hagel that he believes that america is conspireing with the taliban , they believe he can get past that. it's not going to be a smooth transition but they can work on the political and the security issues. they are aware and supportive of karzai 's statement he's going to go to doha, qatar and work on talks with the taliban and eventually the state department officials say there will be direct talks with the taliban as long as they have laid down their arms and they're not having links to al qaeda that include the u.s.
