>>> a florida college campus is on edge after police discovered just how close students came to a dangerous attack. nbc's mark potter is in miami with the very latest. mark, good morning.
>> reporter: good morning to you, natalie. with the university of central florida in orlap doundo back in session, police believe they may have had a very close call with a student keeping weapons and explosives in his dorm room . on the third floor of the tower one dorm where the incident occurred, some of the students are now moving out, no longer comfortable living there, after a fire alarm and a 911 call from a student who said he was hiding in a bathroom because his roommate had pulled a gun on him, police rushed to the dorm and evacuated students.
>> we went over to domino's and a police officer comes in with a huge gun drawn saying "everyone get out now."
>> reporter: after rescuing the 11 caller, police found the body of his roommate who apparently shot himself .
>> while they were in the room they did see a .45 caliber handgun, and a .22 magnum caliber tactical rifle.
>> reporter: while searching the crime scene, officers discovered a backpack loaded with four imp vialsed explosive devices and found evidence an attack on campus may have been planned.
>> we found some notes and some writings that indicated that this was a planned attack. this individual had laid out a time line and laid out some of what we feel were going to be his actions.
>> reporter: police speculate their quick response may have led him to turn his gun on himself. school officials say they had no problems with the suspect but say because he had not registered for the term they were in the process of moving him out of the dorm at the time of the incident.
>> mark potter in florida, thank you.
