Lester Holt: ‘Incredibly exciting’ to witness white smoke

TODAY’s Lester Holt was reporting from the Vatican last week and told his co-anchors what it was like to be in the plaza when it was announced the Catholic Church had a new pope.

>> both times incredibly exciting to watch the energy of the crowd and the white smoke. eight years ago the smoke came out and we were like it is kind of gray, gray flannel thing and this is what it looked like. even if you hadn't seen it you heard the crowd erupt and folks gathered much earlier this time. eight years ago they didn't gather from front until after they heard the bells ring . mention
