Obama promotes immigration, gun control

One week ahead of his State of the Union address, President Obama will hold a series of meetings to discuss immigration proposals, including allowing 11 million undocumented immigrants to earn citizenship. This comes on the heels of a trip earlier in the week to discuss gun control. NBC’s Peter Alexander reports.

>> reporter: immigration reform would allow estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the u.s. to earn citizenship. on monday he took his push for tougher gun laws to minneapolis, the city known as murderapolis in the mid '90s.

>> weapons of war have no place on our streets or in our schools or threaten iing our law enforcement officers .

>> reporter: against the backdrop of those officers, president obama urged supporters to call on congress to act.

>> we don't have to agree on everything to agree it's time to do something.

>> reporter: while both sides largely agree with a need for extended background checks, reinstating the assault weapons ban remains the most controversial effort. president obama is ignoring the nation's economic challenges, critics say.

>> our economy could use some presidential leadership right now.
