Flash mob helps family in need at holidays

A Kentucky family was at the receiving end of a random “flash mob”of kindness when people put more than $500 in an empty box at a  K-Mart parking lot and donated the money to them. NBC’s Kevin Tibbles reports.

>> reporter: savannah, this really is such a sweet story. we've all heard of random acts of kindness but for one kentucky family, struggling to make ends meet, santa claus is alive and well in one very special parking lot . let's call it a random act of christmas . an empty box beautifully wrapped. a handmade card and kindness.

>> i put $10, $5 for me and $5 for my dad's family.

>> it all snowballed because brian bailey wanted to make a difference.

>> i thought wow, if we could get enough people together to put $5 in the box, we could make someone's christmas .

>> reporter: he put the word out on social media , went to the parking lot of the local kmart and that empty box soon filled up.

>> here we go.

>> reporter: he then went searching for a family in need of christmas cheer.

>> you're here tonight to spend money, correct?

>> we were looking to see what we could get for cheap.

>> okay.

>> reporter: he convinced the bruce family to step outside.

>> raymond bruce. this is my wife. this is my daughter, riley and this is a kid i work with. his name is chandler.

>> reporter: it turned out that raymond had taken a second job just to afford gifts for his own kids.

>> thank you so much.

>> oh, my god.

>> you don't know how much this really meant to us.

>> i think we have a general idea .

>> reporter: more than $500. not a dry eye in the parking lot .

>> i just want to say thank you. they didn't have to do it. and we need more people in the world like that.

>> reporter: the true spirit of christmas . we wish you a merry christmas and a happy new year

>> reporter: this wasn't the first flash mob of kindness in louisville . the group behind all this gets together regularly to support small businesses in the area. savannah?
