>> good morning.

>> i'm sure it has been a long night for you and your officers. what can you tell us about the identity of this gunman? have you identified him? are you able to release that this morning?

>> well, first of all, i just want to say that we want to extend our sincere condolences to the families of their lost ones that died this last evening and our thoughts and prayers go out to all their families and loved ones . and in regards to the suspect in this case, we're not able to release it at this particular point in time. it's our hope we'll be able to release that information later today. so for the integrity of the investigation, it's important that we don't release it at this time.

>> completely understandable. you have, in fact, identified him. is there anything you can tell us about him? was this somebody who came in and was targeting somebody in particular or does it appear to you to be a random shooting?

>> it did not appear as though he was targeting any specific individual. it really looked as though it was a random shooting. really anybody that was in his line of sight basically.

>> sheriff, there were reports that his gun may have jammed at one point. can you confirm that? and is it your sense that if not for that, this could have been even worse in terms of loss of life?

>> i believe there's a variety of things that really helped to reduce the loss of lives. i do believe that did happen. the other thing that i think was also a big contributing factor is just the number of law enforcement agencies that came together to help on this particular incident.

>> and --

>> that --

>> sorry to interrupt. very quickly, i just wanted to ask, was he, in fact, wearing body armor , a mask? did he have additional weapons? how well armed is he?

>> i can't tell you that -- he did, in fact, have a mask. at this point in time i can't confirm whether or not he had body armor , but it was very apparent that he had a mission set forth to really take the lives of people within that mall.

>> just a terrible story. sheriff, thank you so much for your time this morning. we wish you the best with your investigation.
