>>> this morning on "today's tech," a technology makeover for me. when people talk about tagging, liking, pinning, checking in, i feel like i'm 100 years old. no idea what you're talking about, so our producers decided it was time for a crash course . here to drag me out of the stone age , technology expert katie lind lindendahl. i need the help.

>> yes.

>> just for the viewers, doent don't have an iphone , not on facebook , don't know what pinterest is and don't have foursquare.

>> we're actually starting with facebook . you don't have a facebook account. over a billion users on facebook this. kind of surprised me being the public personality that you, are but i will say in less than a week the "today" producers have set you up with an account. you have over 12,000 subscribers in less than a week, amazing. not many people can say that. send your first post here, because i want you to see, too, kind of an opportunity to engage with fans, not just behind the scenes and work life but also personal life and they have put up some photos for you. the first time willie will see these photos. put up a prom picture.

>> oh, no.

>> you and your wife. your wife looks gorgeous.

>> oh, my gosh.

>> take control.

>> i need to see this back.

>> and really own it.

>> they made this page for me, nothing to do with it.

>> the value of being on facebook is?

>> i think for you, obviously a public figure, you want to engage with your fans, behind the scenes , off air and on air and let them know who they are, the few friends not on facebook that i know, it's a fear of mission out, not knowing people's birthdays or event and now with facebook , and move over quickly to this table here, did you send a post.

>> i need a friend, isn't that what you do, you have 12,000 friends that you're not executing on. move over here. facebook keeps you in touch with people. savannah, for example, has a birthday on december 27th which you would know if you're on facebook . now there's facebook gifts you can automatically click on someone's name, for 5 bucks and all kinds of gifting options you can use through facebook .

>> automatically choose because they know what you like.

>> they can change the gifts. nice little options, staying in touch with people on facebook .

>> one i struggle with.

>> pinterest, hear people talk about it all the time.

>> if you're at home and not on pinterest, for ideas and inspiration, this is the digital narnia. if you're looking for hairstyles, looking for recipes, barbecue to southwest, i've actually keyed in holiday cupcakes and just thousands of different ideas that you can pick from. my mom is obsessed with this site and always comes up with new recipes and different things, all these different ideas. love these cupcakes. made a snowman cupcake with marshmallows and a junior mint on its head.

>> that's adorable.

>> give you a recipe and you can pin on it.

>> craft ideas, quotes, all these digital pin boards that you can look through.

>> i can see the value in that.

>> your homework for tonight.

>> done.

>> one gadget i could upgrade you to it is the smartphone.

>> i know. i'm still on this guy, and here's what it comes down to for me. typing, i'm on the e-mail all day every day and i feel the touch screen , got these big meaty paws, can't do it.

>> can have a heart to heart because i've kept my blackberry just for the keyboard but i live and breathe on my iphone and the reason people need to switch over to a great quality smartphone, turn by turn navigation, cameras, thousands of apps that are easy to use. once you get your hands on and realize how intuitive it is. for example, i actually use a lot of different photo apps in my iphone and took all of my sister's photos for her holiday card off my iphone and can change the different filters and pop inside my phone right here, a lot of different filters you can change and change it on social from instagram and super cool options in terms of capability in having an smartphone.

>> and you are convinced i could type on there.

>> and i've brought you to ease your mind have the little keyboards now for iphone , if you can't live without the key board, slide out.

>> you're going to help me after we go off here understand how to use this.

>> i think we did it.

>> kind of.
