Taliban suicide bombers attack coalition base in Afghanistan

In what appears to be a complex and well-coordinated attack, a car bomb detonated outside a U.S. base Sunday, leading to a firefight between Afghan guards and insurgents. The fight left at least nine insurgents and five Afghans dead, including two civilians. NBC’s Atia Abawi reports.

>>> let's begin with the breaking news in afghanistan. in kabul with the latest on that attack. good morning.

>> reporter: good morning, lester , it seems to have been a well coordinated and complex attack in eastern afghanistan just outside of jalalabad airfield . it started with a car bomb detonating outside of the gate allowing entrance for other suicide bombers and gunmen to come near the base. at least nine were killed and five afghans including two civilians and three members of the afghan special forces . according to nato here in kabul they say that the insurgents were not able to breech the perimeter, that they were killed before they were able to do that and no isap service members were killed in the attack but there were some who were wounded. jalalabad airfield has been targeted in the past by the taliban especially last spring when we saw nine fatalities. lester ?
