Lester Holt and son team up to anchor in Chicago

You won’t see Lester Holt on Weekend TODAY this week – instead he is traveling to Chicago to help out his son, Stefan, on the local morning show he anchors in the windy city. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!

>> can't help but notice someone is missing this morning.

>> mr. hold.

>> our good friend lester holt not here with us this morning because there's a little something special going on back in chicago . lester , good morning, fill us in.

>> good morning, willie. well, stefan was gracious and his lovely new bride was lovely enough to invite my family for thanksgiving, so we had a wonderful dinner. in preparing for the week i said are you working thanks giving, i said, yeah, if somebody needs, you know, to take the day off i'm happy to fill in and that led to a discussion where basically i invited myself to co-anchor the noon news on channel 5 .

>> and invited himself to thanksgiving dinner , didn't actually invite him.

>> did you ask to see his resume tape.

>> i did and carefully scrutinized that tape and looked at every live shot and stand-up and anchor clip and i said, you know what, i guess it will do and i let him be my co-anchor.

>> talks like an anchor man.

>> lester , how does this feel as a dad, graduations and weddings and now, i don't know what category you put this in because it might be a television first.

>> i don't know. stef and i really enjoy each other and at the heart he's really a -- i say that incredulously. has a real passion for news and it's fun. always kind of shared that thing. used to like to come out on stories with me and used to hang out on the "today" show during high school and would come in on saturday and sunday mornings, always in his blood and i'm a little nervous because he's pretty good.

>> stefan at the news desk.

>> the early years.

>> a lot of guys on the crew this morning, by the way, remembering stef and seeing you around the "today" show.

>> fun for a lot of people to ask.

>> i've got to ask you, my concern for you, lester , seating next to stefan seeing his talent, are you worried about being outshone perhaps.

>> given his height, he's actually taller than me.

>> he's on a pillow.

>> the good news is that i have protected my job because during dinner last night in the kitchen i captured on my iphone a little "gangnam style" dancing. so if he were going to make a move here, you know what the big story is on the noon news today?

>> what?

>> doing a very special report on people who leave the plastic inside their turk we they are cooking and the dangers of that, the hidden dangers.

>> shocking investigation.

>> don't follow your dad's lead. here's the deal, because i was wondering, stefan , did you ever debate getting that mustache like your father?

>> you know what?

>> we discussed that before today , whether or not the mustache should make a comeback, got it right there.

>> i don't know. maybe that would be a good idea.

>> i don't think so.

>> the truth of this, that's why i got demoted here and had to leave chicago because of the mustache.

>> erica, would you like to see your partner in crime without the stash?

>> perfect just the way you are right now, lester .

>> that's nice.

>> she's a keeper.

>> you're not so bad yourself. i'm going to say i'm glad you're timely taking a day off because lester is literally one of the hardest people in the building.

>> he's not off.

>> and go to chicago for family time and here you are working again.

>> when i got up this morning and put the tie on, i'm like what was i thinking in.

>> i think you get that day back now. had to shave and put a tie on.

>> this definitely counts.

>> the man finds work even on vacation. lester and stefan holt, can't wait to watch you guys together. have fun.

>> great, guys, take care.

>> that's super sweet. oh, my gosh. bring your tad to work today.

>> you've got kids. eventually they will come on and do the weather.

>> three boys. i think, as a female meteorologist i'm good though, with the three boys, job security .
