TODAY | November 19, 2012
>>> hey, everybody, welcome, welcome, it's fun day monday, november 19th . we are delighted that you're here with us today. this is a very bittersweet day for me, hoda woman. bittersweet since it's the 10th anniversary since my daddy passed away. you know what it's like. hoda and i both lost our dads way too early, but we were so blessed to have fathers like we did.
>> absolutely.
>> he would have been smiling bigger than anybody on the planet last thursday night.
>> every now and then in life you have a magical moment, and that night, the night that your show premiered, was incredibly magical. it was packed with all kinds of people, us, natalie, matt, al, regis, kris jenner , liza manelli . there was a crazy red carpet . then frank and your kids, anyway, you walked inside and the place was buzzing. and once --
>> sorry. thank god for mary and laura.
>> and the curtain went up and it was one of those things everybody kind of held their breath, this was happening. got on that stage, you guys, and sang like you could not believe. in fact, the guy from "variety" came from me after the show and said give her the tony right now. she's that kind of singer.
>> and actress. she's extraordinary.
>> look, there are lots of favorite moments during the night. one of my favorites had to be when liza manelli was my date. in the middle of the show, carol lee hits this crazy note, and out of nowhere, liza pops out of her seat, you guys, stands up. all i could think of is carol lee is looking at liza manelli giving her a standing ovation in the middle of the show.
>> middle of the song, happens a lot. really does. first of all, as i've said before, i don't think there's an actress on the planet who could play amy from 17 to the end of the show , and the roller coaster life that she lived. the whole cast is sensational. i just want to thank them. everybody says you must be so excited. you know what, i am. i'm grateful beyond belief i get to work with people like that every day. daddy used to say surround yourself with people talented than yourself and you'll look good. thanks to everybody that came and the best wishes . we didn't get the kind of reviews one would want, we got some great ones, but i thought to myself, i can't know what's going on in the hearts and minds of people that come to the show. god bless them, they are doing their job and have the right to their opinion, but what i know for sure is what goes on in the heart of that theater eight times a week when people pay for their tickets come to the show and laugh when i wanted them to and cry where i wanted them to and are up and cheering and standing. and people are coming two and three and four times already again.
>> it's unbelievable.
>> something's happening there. it's very, very exciting.
>> this is liza 's quote. she said did you get my quote for the show? okay, what is it, here it is. she writes, "i found the evening to be inspiring and entertaining. congratulations to kathie lee and the wonderful cast on an exquisite performance. thank you, thank you, thank you."
>> i want to say three times to liza . she knows a little something about it. you know what i also felt as well, she came up to me afterwards. i thought what it must be for somebody like liza who's battled, her trials and tribulations in life, and her mom, judy garland , so publicly went through so many struggles that amy also did. it's so similar to judy garland 's life. what i thought it must be like for liza to watch that story taking fold. she pretty much told me that, too. she said there's just one thing missing you got to put in, just one thing. i said what is it? when amy 's told she can't do this, she can't do this, she needs to say, well, it's the only thing i know how to do, which i thought was really interesting.
>> she sat next to me, remind me to tell kathie that. she brought that up.
>> for me, having everybody around me and the lovely, lovely good wishes was amazing, but i got to go home that night, haven't been home a lot in the last few months. this part is where i'm going to probably lose it. got to go home with my family and children who came from california, and we stayed up until like 3:00 in the morning, and both of my children just blessed me. and i just thought, i got a 22 year old and 19 year old that actually like me and are proud of what's happened there and the beauty that we're trying to bring into the world.
>> congratulations.
>> and hoda, you know how i feel. you and my friends, many are here today, still supporting me, i am deeply, deeply grateful. thank you, everybody. i might be the most grateful woman on the face of the earth today. we're going to let you know tomorrow about a way you can do good in the world this holiday season , we'll let you know tomorrow.
>>> you have heard about the ongoing feud with chelsea, which was put to rest. she said she was sorry on the air, she was supposed to be on the show and minutes before. the wine's around us, it's your favorite chardonnay. she said she was sorry. first she said she hit her eye, then she said she had a stomach virus or food poisoning .
>> maybe she had all three.
>> then she said she was lying about everything.
>> the truth will win out. anyway, hoda and kathie lee , i'm so sorry, please forgive me, won't happen again.
>> love her.
>> apology accepted.
>> who's upset?
>> perez hilton .
>> he was loving it!
>> this is like the worst day ever , because the feud is over.
>> he said he's disappointed. perez, we'll start another one with someone soon.
>>> a lot of fun on the plaza today, you guys.
>> your boyfriend is here. your boyfriend is here, hoda woman!
>> flo rida !
>> oh, oh, oh.
>> how are you, baby?
>> hi! you were rocking it out there.
>> thank you, thank you.
>> i want you to know how good flo rida smells.
>> look who he's wearing around his neck.
>> smell him, smell him.
>> give me some of that. oh, my god. what is that? what is that?
>> it's so good. what is it?
>> clive christian.
>> by the way, i want to point out i got a gift from flo. it's a whistle baby, whistle baby, let me know . and you were nice enough to say you were going to bring a little something special. you're coming back to see us?
>> definitely coming back.
>> when?
>> back real soon , probably a couple days.
>> wednesday?
>> wines day wednesday.
>> you are adorable. thanks for a great, great concert.
>> thank you, and congrats on your new musical.
>> thank you, come see it.
>> i think we're dating. doesn't it feel like we're dating?
>> thank you. see you wednesday.
>> thank you, darling. we're going to have a song from you later, right?
>> yes, we are.
>> see, lots of good news in the world. there is some bad, apparently, twinkies are an endangered species .
>> we heard that. maybe there's hope. i guess they said they were going out of business , everybody freaked out and started stockpiling and trying to buy them on e-bay, now there may be some question as to whether or not someone may buy them out. it's not all the way dead.
>> good, good, good. there's hope. spring's eternal.
>>> the american music awards were beautiful . justin bieber brought up his mom on stage, beautiful , beautiful , beautiful moment.
>> look how surprised. he wins the biggest award of the night. literally physically drags his mother up there. she looks beautiful , by the way, doesn't look like his mom.
>> looks like his sister. she's the tiniest thing. she wrote the great book.
>> interview with her, and he wrote the forward on it. it's a love story between her and her boy. if you haven't read their story, go get "nowhere but up." it's an amazing book.
>> the other favorite moment, you know cy from graangnam style? he busted it out with mc hammer . we have to show a little bit of it. too legit too legit to quit
>> then it went gangnam style.
>> by the way, he's 50.
>> so is carol lee. when you have talent and passion, baby. maybe i shouldn't have said that. i'm a lot older than that!
>> we want to give a shout out to ms. sara haines' sister.
>> sara brought her mom to the party the other night. what a beautiful , beautiful mom you have, sara . she's gorgeous. runs in the family.
>>> all right, we're going to do favorite things. you do yours first.
>> i am so tired of earphones getting tangled up in a big snarly knot. look at these things, these are called art ear buds. you can get them with this retractable thing, or you can get them -- it's got a straight cord, a flat cord.
>> like a yo-yo thing.
>> isn't that cool?
>> great.
>> $30, you guys.
>> mine is something we started using thursday night at opening and it was amazing. it's help-portrait. it's photographers that give back to people in need . they've already rallied 21,447 volunteers. listen to this, 1,500 locations in 56 countries. if you want to know more about it, go to help-portrait.com. there's a guy name jeremy. i wish i could say his name. forgive me, but he was there with his group on thursday night, they found people who have been victims of hurricane sandy, they did their hair, they did their makeup, they got them outfits. they came as our guests to the show, and what they do is give people who lost all their memories in things like the hurricane, give them the camera and hard drive so they can start a whole new life of memories. that is my favorite thing. go on to help-portrait if you want to help them.
>> hi, sara . your favorite thing is your sister.
>> slightly less meaningful than kathie's and my sister is these products by loreal. this is magic gloomy and this is the first step, gives you an iridescent underneath, then this is a tinted spf. that's all she uses.
>> not any foundation on you?
>> other than powder.
